"บล็อก (Blog) หรือ เว็บบล็อก (Weblog) เป็นเว็บไซต์สำหรับเขียนบันทึกเล่าเรื่องราวประจำวันเพื่อสื่อสารความรู้สึกนึกคิดมุมมอง
ประสบการณ์ ความรู้ และข่าวสาร ในเรื่องที่ผู้เขียนท่านหนึ่งๆ (Blogger) สนใจโดยเฉพาะ ซึ่งลักษณะดังกล่าวนี้ทำให้บล็อกต่างกับเว็บบอร์ด
และเนื่องจากความจริงใจและอิสระทางความคิดที่สื่อสารออกไป
ซึ่งส่วนใหญ่อยู่ในลักษณะของบุคคลที่หนึ่ง

วิธีการสังเกตลักษณะของเว็บไซต์ที่เป็นบล็อกนั้น ให้พิจารณาจากลักษณะต่างๆ
ดังนี้คือ
มีการบันทึกเนื้อหาโดยเจ้าของบล็อกอย่างสม่ำเสมอ
ข้อมูลจะถูกจัดไว้อย่างเป็นระเบียบ คือ
รายการล่าสุดจะถูกแสดงไว้ด้านบนสุดของเว็บเพจ
แล้วไล่ลำดับย้อนหลังตามวันเวลาการเขียนไปเรื่อยๆ
มักจะมีการลิงก์ไปหาบล็อกอื่นที่ผู้เขียนสนใจ
หรือได้เสนอความคิดเห็นโยงต่อจากข้อเขียนที่เขาอ้างถึง ดังนั้น
นอกจากบล็อกจะใช้ในการเขียนและเผยแพร่เรื่องราวต่างๆ แล้ว
ก็ยังเป็นแหล่งรวมลิงก์ที่เจ้าของบล็อกนั้นๆ
ใช้เป็นฐานเพื่อเสริมต่อความรู้อยู่เป็นประจำ ไม่ว่าจะเป็นลิงก์ของบล็อกอื่นๆ
หรือลิงก์ของเว็บไซต์ก็ตาม
บันทึกที่เขียนไว้ในบล็อกมักจะมีการแยกแยะเป็นกลุ่มเนื้อหาตามหัวข้อหลักๆ
ที่ผู้เขียนสร้างขึ้นเพื่อช่วยอำนวยความสะดวกให้แก่ผู้อ่านที่สนใจในบันทึกที่มีความสัมพันธ์กันในใจความหลัก
และเมื่อผู้อ่านได้รับความรู้ต่างๆ
จากผุ้เขียนบล็อกแล้ว ผู้อ่านมักจะมีการเสนอความคิดเห็นเพิ่มเติม
เพื่อเป็นการต่อยอดความรู้และเพื่อให้เกิดการแลกเปลี่ยนความรู้ระหว่างกลุ่มผู้อ่านและผู้เขียนบล็อก
